Egypt FA Chief Flies to Turkey to Mediate Salah-Hassan Rift

Lead:

The Free Patriotic Movement issued a statement calling for reconsideration of summons issued to Father Nageeb al-Omeil, priest of Rmish parish, citing the exceptional security circumstances in southern Lebanon under Israeli occupation. Simultaneously, Hani Abu Rida, chairman of the Egyptian Football Association, traveled to Turkey to meet with Mohamed Salah and facilitate reconciliation with Egypt coach Hossam Hassan ahead of November's African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, following tensions from a September match substitution.

Details:

According to Al-Joumhouria, the Free Patriotic Movement framed the Rmish priest summons as raising questions beyond judicial procedure to encompass state responsibility toward citizens defending their land during occupation. The statement emphasized that while respecting judicial independence and rule of law remain non-negotiable, justice also requires consideration of exceptional circumstances, proportionality in measures, and contextual interpretation of speech. The movement expressed solidarity with Father al-Omeil and residents of Rmish, calling for reassessment of the measures taken.

According to Al-Akhbar, Hani Abu Rida's visit to Turkey serves a dual purpose: signing cooperation agreements with the Turkish football federation and meeting Salah, who plays for Trabzonspor. The initiative aims to bridge positions between the striker and coach Hassan before the upcoming squad gathering. The underlying tension stems from Hassan's substitution of Salah in the 60th minute during an Angola match in African Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying, with Hassan citing "technical reasons" at the postgame press conference. Salah subsequently departed the camp and missed the following fixture against South Sudan.

No agreement or full resolution has been announced by either party.

Watch For:

  • Whether the Rmish summons case proceeds or faces judicial reconsideration based on security and contextual grounds.
  • The outcome of Hani Abu Rida's mediation and whether Salah and Hassan reach workable terms before the November national team gathering.
  • Possible broader implications of the priest summons regarding state conduct toward civilians in occupied border areas.
  • Lebanon Brief
