Lebanon Seizes 46.7kg of Cocaine at Beirut Airport

Lead:

Lebanon's Customs Administration and the General Directorate of General Security jointly intercepted a major cocaine shipment on the night of October 31, 2026, at Rafic Hariri International Airport. A Syrian traveler arrived on Middle East Airlines flight MEA 576 from Accra, Ghana, carrying approximately 46.7 kilograms of cocaine concealed in checked baggage. Finance Minister Yassin Jaber and Customs officials characterized the operation as the result of enhanced coordination between agencies and a breakthrough in detecting sophisticated concealment techniques designed to evade scanner detection.

Details:

According to Al-Joumhouria, the seizure followed intelligence monitoring and coordination at the customs checkpoint, where security personnel subjected the traveler's luggage to examination. The source reports that Customs officials praised the work of customs enforcement personnel in identifying complex concealment methods and preventing passage of what officials describe as a professionally prepared shipment.

Finance Minister Yassin Jaber, according to Al-Diyar, noted that the successful operation stemmed from effective coordination between Customs Administration and the General Directorate of General Security. Jaber emphasized the importance of strengthening interagency cooperation and information exchange to protect Lebanon and public safety. Al-Diyar reports that Jaber also highlighted efforts by Customs personnel to detect advanced concealment and camouflage techniques.

Jaber stressed, according to Al-Diyar, that Customs formations operate within a framework aimed at strengthening customs work and enhancing surveillance at land, sea, and air crossings, coupled with intensified pursuit of smuggling networks operating across Lebanon's borders.

Watch For:

Whether Lebanese authorities will publicly identify additional members of the trafficking network or release information on the shipment's intended destination and market value. The case may signal either improved interagency security capacity or increased trafficking attempts through Beirut's primary international airport. Future operations and whether similar seizures follow will indicate whether this operation represents a sustained enforcement shift or an isolated success.
