ALBAWABA - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday he has approved new vehicle fuel economy standards, another step in his administration’s dismantling of rules put in place under former President Joe Biden.
Trump posted on Truth Social that the reforms will stop what he called Biden's “electric vehicle mandate,” according to Reuters. He said the tougher rules would cut waste in U.S. auto manufacturing, lower vehicle prices and save American households thousands of dollars.
The announcement did not say what the new fuel economy targets would be, or when they would take effect.
The decision comes in the wake of the Trump administration’s attempt to roll back goals set in 2024 that would have increased average fuel economy for light-duty cars to about 50.4 miles per gallon by 2031.

Trump has described the Biden-era standards as an electric vehicle mandate, but they did not explicitly require people to buy electric automobiles. Instead, they gave manufacturers the option to reach efficiency targets by combining upgrades to traditional combustion engines and the use of hybrid and electric vehicles.
The Trump administration started updating those standards in June 2025 as part of a broader effort to lower compliance requirements and manufacturing costs for vehicles.
