ALBAWABA - An Iranian official revealed to Reuters on Tuesday that Tehran is willing to reopen Hormuz within a week if the United States decreases its military pressure and plays down the blockade enforced on Iranian ports.
The official further mentioned that the Islamic Republic of Iran submitted a new proposal to the United States, adding that the new proposal to end the war could be discussed in New York via mediators.
It is worth noting that Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi and President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian are both in New York to attend the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
Tehran intends to use the UN General Assembly meetings in New York this week to hold consultations with mediating nations; the same official stated that the Iranian delegation currently attending the assembly possesses full authority to revive the diplomatic track with Washington.
He added, "Our proposal was conveyed to the US via intermediaries on September 16." The Iranian official emphasized that Tehran welcomes a revival of diplomacy, provided the US takes concrete steps.
The same official stated that "there is a possibility of moving towards an agreement," adding that Washington must demonstrate "seriousness and commitment" if diplomacy is to make progress.
The official explained that Iran is seeking indications from Washington of a readiness to return to negotiations and to take steps to end the US military blockade of Iranian ports and halt military operations related to the Strait of Hormuz.
