Egypt intensifies regional diplomacy with Qatar, Türkiye

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aati met on Thursday with his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in New Alamein ahead of the seventh session of the Egyptian-Qatari Joint Higher Committee. The two ministers praised the significant momentum in bilateral relations, highlighting growing high-level visits and continued coordination on regional issues. They stressed the importance of holding the joint committee annually and translating its outcomes into practical steps. They also welcomed growing economic and investment ties. Abdel-Aati noted that trade between Egypt and Qatar rose 80% in 2025, while investment cooperation has expanded, particularly following the November 2025 announcement of the Alam El-Roum project and the launch of its first phase by Qatari Diar on August 9. He also highlighted a Qatari-funded sustainable aviation fuel project in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The talks covered regional developments, with both sides calling for de-escalation, diplomatic solutions and a return to negotiations between the US and Iran. They stressed the need to ensure safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in line with international law. On Gaza, the ministers stressed continued coordination with the US and regional partners to implement the US president’s peace plan, urging Israel to meet the first-phase commitments and roadmap. They warned against settlement expansion and settler violence in the West Bank and provocations at Al-Aqsa Mosque. They also discussed Lebanon, Sudan and the Horn of Africa, reaffirming support for sovereignty, territorial integrity and national institutions. Separately, Abdel-Aati held a phone call with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to discuss regional developments and de-escalation efforts. The ministers stressed the need to return to diplomatic tracks and implement the US peace plan for Gaza, including the agreed Israeli withdrawal, increased humanitarian aid, early recovery and reconstruction efforts. They also warned against Israel’s planned E1 settlement project in the occupied West Bank, saying it would undermine Palestinian territorial continuity and prospects for an independent state. The ministers further discussed the situation in Syria following recent Israeli attacks on Syrian territory.
