Egypt condemns Somaliland’s move to open embassy in Jerusalem

Egypt has strongly condemned the illegal step taken by the self-declared “Somaliland” region to open a so-called “embassy” in occupied Jerusalem.  A statement by the Foreign Ministry in Cairo described the move as a flagrant violation of international law and the relevant UN resolutions, and that it affects the legal and historical status of the city. Egypt reaffirmed its complete rejection of any unilateral actions that aim creating an illegal reality in Jerusalem or granting legitimacy to entities or arrangements that contradict international law. It also emphasised that East Jerusalem is a Palestinian land occupied since 1967, and any attempt to change its legal or historical status is null and void. The statement also underlined Egypt’s full support for the unity and sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia, rejecting any unilateral measures that threaten Somalia’s territorial integrity or undermine its sovereignty. Mohamed Hagi, ambassador of Somalia’s breakaway region to Israel, said earlier this week, that Somaliland will open an embassy in Jerusalem and Israel will establish its representation in Hargeisa “soon”. The development, which comes months after Israel officially recognised the independence of Somaliland, reflects “growing friendship, mutual respect, and strategic cooperation between our two peoples”, Hagi said in a statement on X on Tuesday.
