Egypt to Raise Minimum Teacher Salary to 15,000 Pounds

Overview:

Egypt's government has introduced a comprehensive package of wage and benefit increases targeting public sector workers, with primary focus on educators and healthcare professionals. Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli outlined phased salary improvements, alongside freezes on petroleum product prices and expanded internet subsidies for households. The moves reflect official prioritization of social spending amid ongoing geopolitical pressures affecting domestic financial markets.

Details:

The minimum monthly income for teachers will reach 15,000 Egyptian pounds through a gradual implementation plan over the next two years, according to government announcements. Healthcare workers will receive incentive bonuses increasing by no less than 50 percent by the 2029-2030 fiscal year, with additional allocations to clear patient waiting lists. Teachers temporarily assigned to intermediate certificate examinations for the second semester of the 2025-2026 academic year will receive compensation at 130 Egyptian pounds per day of actual work.

The pricing committee held petroleum product prices unchanged following a quarterly review of exchange rates and Brent crude benchmarks for the July-September 2026 period. Internet service providers will expand the baseline home internet package from 50 gigabytes to 100 gigabytes at the existing monthly rate of 150 Egyptian pounds, effective immediately. The subsidy measure aims to reduce household digital costs and expand access to remote education and online services.

Investment fund assets exceeded 504.71 billion Egyptian pounds by end-September 2026, up 33.74 billion pounds from June's close. The Financial Regulatory Authority reported 232 registered investment funds operating across various categories, with some funds delivering returns of 15 percent over three months.

Outlook:

Investors are monitoring whether sustained wage increases prove sustainable given currency pressures and external financing needs. Labour cost inflation in public sectors may necessitate efficiency gains or further revenue mobilization to prevent fiscal deterioration.
