Egypt Stock Exchange Halts Trading as EGX100 Falls 10%

Overview:

The Egyptian Exchange suspended trading on Sunday for half an hour following sharp declines across all major indices. The EGX100 index fell 10 percent, the EGX30 dropped 5.4 percent, and the EGX70 lost 11.37 percent, with losses attributed to escalating regional geopolitical developments, currency volatility, and outflows of foreign investment. Market officials confirmed this marks only the second or third such halt in seven years.

Details:

Rania Yaqoub, board member of the Egyptian Exchange, stated that accelerating geopolitical developments in the region and uncertainty about future conditions drove the market pressure. The selloff was accompanied by significant foreign investor withdrawals. Yaqoub emphasized that the 30-minute trading halt remains an exceptional measure, though regional tensions and dollar movements have created sustained market strain.

Omar Radwan, chairman of the exchange's board, noted that recent volatility reflects multiple factors including geopolitical risks, regional tensions, and currency fluctuations. He advised investors to view stock market participation as a long-term investment strategy and emphasized that the exchange attracted approximately 600,000 new investors during the current year.

The losses, which exceeded 171 billion Egyptian pounds, occurred as the central bank and government convened crisis management meetings to assess spillover effects from international supply-chain disruptions and rising commodity prices on domestic markets and reserves.

Outlook:

Observers are monitoring whether foreign investor confidence stabilizes or whether additional outflows trigger further trading suspensions. Recovery will depend on resolution of regional tensions and stabilization of the Egyptian pound against the dollar.
