Egypt Sugar Prices Drop to 25 Pounds Per Kilogram

Overview:

Egypt's Ministry of Supply confirmed significant price declines in two staple commodities as part of efforts to stabilize food markets and combat anti-competitive practices. Sugar prices have retreated from peaks of 50 pounds per kilogram to approximately 25 pounds, while egg cartons have declined from near 200 pounds to around 130 pounds. The government has established 284 discount centers nationwide offering 30 essential items at reduced prices for six months.

Details:

Supply Minister Sharif Farouk emphasized that commodity withholding and stockpiling intended to manipulate market supply constitute violations subject to legal sanctions. The ministry is intensifying market surveillance to prevent hoarding practices that disrupt product availability and harm consumer purchasing power.

The government's price-stabilization initiative operates through newly established discount centers distributed across provincial governorates and new administrative cities. The program targets relief for lower-income households facing inflationary pressures on basic necessities including flour, sugar, oil, and protein sources.

Separately, crude oil prices climbing to 110–115 dollars per barrel have increased pressure on Egypt's energy import bill, estimated at approximately 3 billion dollars monthly. The 2026–2027 budget assumed oil at 75 dollars per barrel; each additional dollar above that threshold costs the state roughly 3.5 billion pounds in budgetary strain.

Outlook:

Market observers are tracking whether price momentum in staples persists amid continued enforcement of anti-hoarding measures. Rising global energy costs remain a structural headwind for Egypt's fiscal position and consumer-price stability into 2027.
