Egypt Launches First Locally Assembled Electric Vehicle, the MAGE EV

Overview:

Egypt's automotive sector moved to localize electric vehicle production as Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, discussed gas exploration partnerships with Chevron executives. Global energy markets showed mixed signals: crude prices fell sharply while gold gained on safe-haven demand ahead of U.S. elections. Food supply data confirmed Egypt holds grain reserves sufficient for six months.

Details:

The National Company for Metallic Industries announced the start of local production of the MAGE EV at its facilities, with delivery expected in the first quarter of 2027. The announcement was made at an official ceremony attended by Industry Minister Khalid Hashem and Electricity Minister Mahmoud Ismail. The move signals a strategic shift toward electric vehicle manufacturing capacity within Egypt's existing automotive base.

Badawi met Kevin McLoughlan, Chevron's Vice President for Exploration, at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC 2026) to review results from the Narcissus 2 well and discuss integration of the Cyprus Aphrodite field with Egyptian infrastructure. In separate energy developments, oil prices retreated more than 7 percent during Monday trading as Tehran signaled continued oil supply decisions. Gold prices rose 0.3 percent to $3,960.80 per ounce on falling energy costs and inflation relief amid expectations for U.S. congressional elections.

Ahmed Kamal, official spokesman for Egypt's Supply Ministry, confirmed the country's strategic grain reserves cover at least six months of needs. The ministry is expanding distribution outlets and planning discounts of up to 25 percent through markets and pop-up shops ahead of Ramadan.

Outlook:

Investors are monitoring the MAGE EV rollout to assess local EV assembly viability and cost competitiveness against imports. Energy traders are tracking Chevron's exploration results in Egyptian waters and any deal announcements that could expand gas output or regional LNG capacity.
