Bank of Cairo Begins Trading After 27x Oversubscribed IPO

Overview:

Bank of Cairo commenced trading on the Egyptian Exchange's main market today following completion of Egypt's largest initial public offering to date. The bank offered 45 percent of its capital—approximately 36 billion Egyptian pounds at 5.30 pounds per share—achieving a total market value of 80.8 billion pounds. The private tranche drew 6-fold coverage while the public offering attracted 27-fold subscription, signaling strong institutional and retail investor confidence despite regional headwinds.

Details:

Islam Azam, chair of the Financial Regulatory Authority, characterized the offering as a qualitative leap for Egypt's capital market, demonstrating its capacity to absorb large equity placements. The private placement segment reached 250 billion pounds in demand. Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli attended the opening bell ceremony alongside Central Bank Governor Hasan Abdullah, Egyptian Stock Exchange Chairman Omar Radwan, and executives from major domestic banks.

Hussein Abaaza, Bank of Cairo's chief executive, described the offering as successful across all metrics—subscription rates, investor participation, and allocation ratios—despite regional challenges and geopolitical tensions. He credited cooperation from the Central Bank, which extended support beyond regulatory oversight to facilitate investor discussions and highlight economic strength.

The offering reflects the government's strategic privatization program, which aims to improve operational efficiency of state-owned assets, broaden private sector participation, and expand citizen and institutional shareholding. This transaction follows Egypt's earlier 1 billion dollar World Bank development financing agreement and contributes to the administration's goal of achieving fiscal surpluses and reducing public debt levels.

Outlook:

Investors will monitor the bank's operational performance and capital deployment strategy post-listing. Market analysts are tracking whether the successful Bank of Cairo flotation accelerates the government's planned pipeline of further state asset offerings and strengthens retail participation in equity markets.
