Egypt Central Bank Holds Rates at 19% for Fourth Time

Overview:

Egypt's monetary policy committee maintained its benchmark interest rates unchanged, keeping the overnight deposit rate at 19 percent and the lending rate at 20 percent. The decision reflects caution over inflation pressures stemming from geopolitical instability, while the government simultaneously announced measures to support investment and expand domestic manufacturing capacity across multiple sectors.

Details:

The Central Bank of Egypt's Monetary Policy Committee decided to hold rates at their current levels, citing ongoing inflationary risks driven by escalating regional tensions that outweigh the effects of monetary tightening measures already in place. The decision came as the bank noted that inflation forecasts remain subject to upside risks through the first quarter of 2027, though rates are expected to decline thereafter.

In parallel policy development, the Cabinet approved a reduction in installment interest rates for real estate developers and investment projects in new cities from previous levels to 12 percent, aimed at stimulating the real estate sector. The government also authorized a Golden License for a 750-million-dollar solar energy project in Minya and approved establishment of a new leather and footwear manufacturing facility in Robiki under a special free-zone framework.

On the structural reform front, the government is transitioning to a new conditional cash-transfer support system beginning January, replacing the current commodity subsidy model with targeted monetary support to qualifying citizens. Additionally, the National Center for Housing and Building Research is coordinating a comprehensive waste management plan for new cities to enhance sustainable development. Foreign investment prospects gained momentum as a leading Chinese aluminum group is exploring investments of approximately 2 billion dollars near the Suez Canal to establish an industrial complex aimed at creating thousands of jobs and boosting Egyptian exports.

Outlook:

Market participants are monitoring whether inflation will begin to decline in early 2027 as the central bank projects, which could create space for eventual rate cuts. Investors are also watching the effectiveness of the new investment incentive packages and the progress of major infrastructure and manufacturing projects in attracting both domestic and international capital.
