Egypt Central Bank Holds Rates Steady for Fourth Time

Overview:

Egypt's monetary policy committee maintained its benchmark interest rates unchanged, keeping the overnight deposit rate at 19 percent and the lending rate at 20 percent. Simultaneously, the government announced a comprehensive national economic transformation program in coordination with the central bank. The Council of Ministers approved multiple investment initiatives, including reduced financing terms for developers in new cities and new industrial projects spanning renewable energy, leather manufacturing, and pharmaceutical production.

Details:

The Central Bank of Egypt's monetary policy committee confirmed its decision to hold all benchmark interest rates constant, citing recent inflation developments and global economic slowdown. The main operation rate remained at 19.5 percent. This represents the fourth consecutive hold, reflecting the bank's assessment that current conditions do not warrant adjustment. The stability supported currency markets, with the Egyptian pound stabilizing at prevailing levels following the announcement.

Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli emphasized government coordination with the central bank on the national economic transformation program, designed to strengthen production, investment, and citizen welfare. The initiative represents a continuation of structural economic reforms undertaken over recent years.

The Council of Ministers reduced financing interest rates for real estate developers and investment projects—including agricultural, tourism, and service ventures—in new cities to 12 percent, aiming to stimulate development activity. The government also approved 22 applications for land allocation in new cities on a dollar basis. New industrial licenses included a leather and shoe manufacturing facility in Al-Robiki under the special free zone system, and a renewable energy solar project in Minya worth 750 million dollars.

Egyptian workers' remittances reached 47.3 billion dollars during the 2025/2026 financial year, representing 29.6 percent growth compared to the prior year. The Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade reported establishment of 26,000 new companies in the first half of 2026, with total capital exceeding 97 billion Egyptian pounds—a 20 percent increase year-over-year.

Outlook:

Investors should monitor whether the maintained interest rates prove sufficient to manage inflation as global economic conditions evolve. The government's focus on attracting foreign and domestic capital through reduced financing costs and new industrial zones signals priority for production-led growth over financial tightening.
