Zamalek begins Egyptian League title bid with draw

CAIRO — The Egyptian Premier League is back for a new season, with plenty of clashes to watch. The 2026–27 campaign began, with 20 teams competing in the 68th edition of the league. The opening day featured three matches. Abu Qir Fertilizers made headlines with a 1-0 win over NBE Club in their Premier League debut. Wadi Degla and defending champions Zamalek both started with 0-0 draws against ZED FC and Al-Ittihad respectively. Zamalek 0-0 Al-Ittihad Zamalek and Al-Ittihad of Alexandria drew 0-0 at Cairo International Stadium. Both teams took a point from their opening league match. Zamalek started well and pushed for an early goal. They put Al-Ittihad under pressure in the first 15 minutes. Al-Ittihad then grew into the game and created chances. Zambian winger Pascal Phiri came close to scoring. The first half ended 0-0. Zamalek made one change at half-time. Mohamed El-Sayed replaced Ahmed Fatouh. Al-Ittihad started the second half strongly. They put Zamalek under pressure with several attacks. Zamalek coach Moataz Gamal made two more changes in the 68th minute. Chico Banza and Ahmed Rabie came on for Nasser Mansi and Adam Kayed. Al-Ittihad kept creating chances late in the game. But they could not find a winner. The match ended 0-0. Abu Qir 1-0 NBE Club Abu Qir Fertilizers made a winning start to their first Egyptian Premier League campaign. They beat NBE Club 1-0 at Alexandria Stadium. Ali Hussein scored the only goal in the 58th minute. He went one-on-one with goalkeeper Abdel Aziz El-Balouti and calmly found the net. The goal gave Abu Qir Fertilizers a historic win in their Premier League debut. Wadi Degla 0-0 ZED FC Wadi Degla and ZED FC played out a 0-0 draw at Cairo’s Al-Salam Stadium. Both teams had chances, but neither could score. ZED FC right-back Tarek Alaa picked up the first yellow card of the new Egyptian Premier League season in the 75th minute. Two minutes later, Wadi Degla defender Mahmoud Adel received the second. The draw gave both teams one point.
