Abu Dhabi: Yas Clinic Khalifa City has successfully performed its first partial knee replacement using robotic and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, marking a significant milestone in advanced medical care. The procedure was carried out by Dr Fawzi Mazek, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Canadian Board-certified specialist, who has more than 30 years of experience in orthopaedic surgery and joint replacement. The patient, a 74-year-old Emirati man, was able to stand and walk with the assistance of a walker within hours of the operation.Advanced surgical approachPartial knee replacement is considered an advanced treatment for patients whose damage is limited to a specific area of the knee joint. The procedure replaces only the affected portion, preserving healthy bone, cartilage and ligaments, which supports faster recovery and improved mobility compared to traditional methods. While such procedures typically take more than two hours, the surgical team completed this operation in just one hour. The patient was able to walk within hours and was discharged the following day, after being kept under observation to complete a course of antibiotics and ensure optimal recovery.Precision through technologyDr Fawzi Mazek highlighted the impact of robotic-assisted surgery, noting that the technology allows highly accurate measurements and personalised surgical planning for each patient.“These technologies enable greater precision during surgery, preserve healthy tissues whenever possible, and improve functional outcomes,” he said, adding that rapid patient recovery demonstrates the value of advanced surgical solutions.Commitment to innovationDr Maysoon Al Karam, Chief Medical Officer at Yas Clinic Khalifa City, said the procedure represents an important step in the hospital’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge medical technologies. She noted that the integration of AI and robotics into healthcare enables improved outcomes for patients while reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a centre for advanced medical services.Enhancing patient outcomesThe achievement reflects Yas Clinic Khalifa City’s continued focus on advancing specialised surgical services through the integration of modern technologies and AI.The hospital aims to enhance precision in procedures, improve patient recovery times, and deliver high-quality care aligned with international standards.
