Wheat deliveries over 1.5m tonnes, exceeding 30% of target

Egyptian farmers have supplied 1.54 million tons of local wheat so far this season, surpassing 30 per cent of the government’s target, Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation announced on Thursday. The ministry aims to collect 5 million tonnes in total, supported by financial incentives and logistical measures to ease the process for farmers. Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk stressed that wheat is a national food security priority, vital for bread and other staples. He noted that the cultivated area reached 3.7 million feddans this year, an increase of 600,000 feddans compared to last season.  To encourage farmers, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi directed raising the procurement price to 2,500 Egyptian pounds per ardab, ensuring fair returns and boosting supply. The government has set up 400 collection points nationwide to reduce transport burdens, and pledged to pay farmers within 48 hours of delivery. A central operations room and local monitoring committees are in place to resolve issues quickly and provide technical support.
