ALBAWABA — Iran is debating whether to maintain its longstanding ban on nuclear weapons if hostilities resume, security chief Mohsen Rezaei said Saturday, raising the possibility of a major policy shift as Washington weighs further military action.
Speaking to state television, Rezaei said no decision had been made to change the prohibition, according to Reuters. His remarks described an internal debate, rather than an announcement that Tehran would pursue nuclear weapons.
Rezaei also said negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme could not proceed unless Washington accepted Tehran’s demands. He insisted that the conflict must end permanently and that Iran’s rights under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty should be respected in any subsequent negotiations.
The security chief further warned that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until Iran’s conditions were met, linking the strategic shipping route to the wider diplomatic dispute.
The comments came as Iranian negotiators met Qatari mediators in Doha on Saturday, following more than 12 hours of discussions in Tehran the previous day, a source briefed on the negotiations told Reuters.
رضائي: لم يتخذ أي قرار جديد بشأن تغيير عقيدتنا النووية لكن يدور نقاش حول ما إذا كان ينبغي لنا الإبقاء على العقيدة نفسها إذا اندلعت الحرب مجددا
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said President Donald Trump had not decided whether to launch new strikes against Iran and would prefer a diplomatic resolution. However, Rubio stressed that Washington retained the ability to act militarily.
Rezaei’s remarks introduce another potential consequence of renewed fighting into those talks. For now, Tehran has announced neither a reversal of its nuclear weapons ban nor a decision to build a bomb.
