ALBAWABA - The U.S. and China will set up a “communication channel” for potential future AI incidents as the technology rapidly progresses, according to a White House statement on Friday.
The move comes after a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, with the two world leaders having focused on the rising challenges brought about with AI advancement in their talks.
In order to better face the challenges, the two countries set up a "U.S.-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue to exchange views on risks and benefits" of AI, the White House said in a fact sheet – adding that the countries agreed on calling it SI, Super Intelligence.
Trump stated before the summit, "Super Intelligence (SI) will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is." – "That is China's position also," he added on social media.
While Chinese leader Xi Jinping called for the US and China to manage their superpower rivalry and keep AI under human control, saying:
"We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control," he said at the White House on Thursday.
The next AI exchange between the superpowers is set to occur by November, according to the White House factsheet.
