Ukraine calls for new European role after U.S. elections

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Thursday that he expects new steps to support Ukraine following the midterm elections in the United States.

He added that while it is not possible to end the war without the involvement of the United States, Europe needs to take on a new role.

Speaking at a press conference in Bucharest, Sybiha said: "We expect new mechanisms. All changes always provide an opportunity for new mechanisms to emerge. We expect new steps to support Ukraine."

He added that while ending the war with Russia without the United States and President Donald Trump is not realistic, "we must, in parallel, define a new role for Europe as a complementary pathway to the main American pathway," affirming that Ukraine will seize any opportunity to accelerate peace efforts.

He said: "We need to put pressure on Russia. We see no indications on the ground, on the battlefield, that indicate a Russian readiness for serious negotiations."

These statements come as Melania Trump, the wife of the American president, gathers representatives of Russia and Ukraine on Thursday at an event at the White House to celebrate the six-day ceasefire, which she helped broker in the Russian-controlled city of Oleshky.

At the same time, American officials are intensifying efforts to reach an agreement to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began with the Russian invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. A trilateral meeting involving officials from the United States, Ukraine, and Russia is scheduled to be held from November 10 to 11 in Abu Dhabi.
