UK Defense Senior Advisor to the Middle East and North Africa (DSAME), Vice Admiral Edward Ahlgren, concluded a two-day visit to Lebanon on September 23, the British embassy in Lebanon said.
Ahlgren met President Joseph Aoun, Defense Minister Michel Menassa and Lebanese Army Commander General Rodolphe Haykal. He was accompanied by British Chargée D’Affaires Victoria Dunne and Deputy Defense Attaché Squadron Leader Craig Pearson.
Ahlgren underlined the UK’s “continued partnership with the Lebanese Armed Forces and their vital role in securing Lebanon’s borders, supporting stability in the south, and enabling de-escalation,” a British embassy statement said.
“The visit reaffirmed UK support for the Government of Lebanon, including their diplomatic efforts to secure a more peaceful future for the people of Lebanon that protects its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” it added.
Following the visit, Chargée D’Affaires Dunne said: “The UK remains committed to Lebanon’s sovereignty and long-term security. In our meetings, we reiterated our partnership with the Lebanese Armed Forces as Lebanon’s sole legitimate defender, and support to the Government of Lebanon as it works to strengthen state authority, take full responsibility for security, and reduce tensions. The UK stands ready to support efforts that protect Lebanon and its people.”
Ahlgren for his part said: “It was a privilege to return to Lebanon and meet senior leaders at this important moment. The UK will continue to work with the Lebanese Armed Forces in their central role to maintain security and stability across Lebanon.’’
Since 2009, the UK has contributed over £190m to Lebanon’s security sector, including more than £69m for the Internal Security Forces and over £120m for the Lebanese Armed Forces through equipment, infrastructure and training.
“Lebanon’s stability remains vital to the region,” the embassy added.
