UAE residence visa renewal guide: Documents, steps, and fees explained

Dubai: If your residence visa is expiring soon, ensure you renew it in time, to maintain your legal status in the UAE and avoid overstaying fines.We take you through the steps, detailing all the documents you need, and processes you must complete, for the renewal process.Visa renewal in the UAEResidence visa renewal in the UAE is a mandatory process governed by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA), in Dubai, and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) in all other emirates: Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah.The renewal process is quite similar to the initial visa issuance process, in terms of requisite conditions and procedures involved. Applicants who are aged 18 and above must pass a medical fitness test, renew their Emirates ID, and ensure their passport remains valid for at least six months.By completing the renewal on time, you will be able to protect access to banking, healthcare, education, and other essential services that are all linked to a valid residence permit.Who must renew their visa?All expatriates holding a residence visa are eligible to renew it upon expiry. Here are the major categories, according to the Emirates Government Services Hub (EGSH):Employees in the private sector, government and semi-government sectorsFree zone employeesHolders of Golden Visas or Green VisasFreelancersInvestors and property ownersFamily dependentsStudents in accredited UAE institutionsRetireesDomestic workersAlthough each category has specific document requirements and eligibility criteria, the renewal process for all these categories generally follows the same steps.The sponsor is responsible for initiating the renewal process. For employment visas, the employer or the company’s public relations officer (PRO) handles the application, while for family visas, the sponsoring resident submits the renewal. In the case of self-sponsored visas, such as investors, and Golden Visa or Green Visa holders, the individual must manage their renewal directly. They can do so online, through an authorised Amer Centre in Dubai, or through ICP Customer Happiness Centres in other emirates.When to start the residence visa renewal processThe window for visa renewal opens 30 days before the residence visa expiry date. Follow these steps to ensure a seamless, efficient process:Step 1: Verify visa expiry and eligibilityEnsure you meet all original eligibility conditions, and that your related documents are active. For instance, if you are an investor, your trade licence must be valid, and if you are on an employment visa, your employment contract must be active.Next, confirm the validity of your visa through the GDRFA application status tracker on their website (gdrfad.gov.ae), the ICP Smart Services website, or the UAEICP mobile app. Follow these steps to check visa validity on ICP’s Smart Services portal:Visit smartservices.icp.gov.ae. Log in with your UAE PASS.Click on ‘Public Services’ and head to ‘File Validity’.Enter your details, including your nationality, date of birth, and Unified ID (UID) number – a 9- to 15-digit immigration identifier that can be found on your visa page and is securely stored in your Emirates ID.Select ‘Verify’. You will be able to see when your visa is set to expire.Step 2: Complete the medical fitness testLearn the steps, costs and documents required to complete a medical fitness test. This step is mandatory for applicants aged 18 and above, and can be completed at Dubai Health Authority (DHA)-approved medical centres and accredited centres like Smart Salem in Dubai, or in similar authorised medical fitness centres across other emirates in the UAE.The examination includes a blood test that screens for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and a chest X-ray for active pulmonary tuberculosis. For certain visa categories, there are additional tests of Hepatitis B and C, and syphilis. Female domestic workers must also undergo an additional pregnancy test.The test takes about 10 to 30 minutes to complete, and results are transmitted electronically in Dubai, to the DHA and GDRFA. In other emirates, the results are processed by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP). You can access them using the TAMM Medical Report system in Abu Dhabi, or via MOHAP’s website in other emirates (mohap.gov.ae).Cost: Between Dh250 and Dh350Step 3: Renew the Emirates IDThe Emirates ID renewal occurs alongside the visa renewal, since it is directly linked to the residence visa. Both documents reflect the same validity period.You can renew the Emirates ID online via the ICP portal or the UAEICP smart app, or in-person at an ICP Customer Happiness Centre in all emirates, or an authorised Amer Centre in Dubai. The required documents for renewing the Emirates ID, according to the ICP, are:Your passportPersonal photographMedical examination certificate with a ‘fit’ resultIn order to receive an Emirates ID, individuals over the age of 15 years old are required to complete biometric collection procedures at an authorised service centre. However, in the visa renewal process, your fingerprints and photograph are already on file, so the process can continue without the need for an in-person visit for biometric data collection.Here are the steps to renew your Emirates ID on the official ICP portal:Visit ICP’s website, smartservices.icp.gov.ae. Log in with your UAE PASS.Select ‘Services’ and choose ‘Interactive Services’. Then head to ‘Identity Card Renewal’.Review the application form and make the necessary adjustments to the retrieved data, if required.Attach the documents.Pay the required fees and complete the process at an ICP Customer Happiness Centre if your biometric details are required. If not, your Emirates ID renewal process is complete. The new ID will be delivered to you via courier service.Cost: Dh200Step 4: Submit the renewal applicationOnce you have completed the above steps, submit the renewal application through the following channels:If you are in Dubai – You can submit it online via GDRFA’s website (gdrfad.gov.ae) or the GDRFA DUBAI mobile app. If you’d like to do so in-person, you can submit it at Amer Centres, and GDRFA’s Customer Happiness Centres.In other emirates – Submit the application online via ICPUAE’s mobile app, or ICP Smart Services portal (smartservices.icp.gov.ae). Alternatively, you could visit an ICP Customer Happiness Centre to complete the task in person.Cost for visa renewalA standard two-year employment visa renewal costs between Dh2,500 and Dh4,000 per person. Investor or partner visa renewals range from Dh3,000 to Dh5,000, excluding the trade licence renewal fees. For Golden Visa renewals, it costs between Dh2,800 and Dh4,000. Overstay fines and grace periodsStandard employment and property visas are valid for two years, while free zone visas are valid for three years, and Golden Visas and Green Visas are valid for five to 10 years. Domestic worker visas have to be renewed annually, while student visas are provided for the duration of their study programme.Failing to renew the visa in time can result in daily fines. According to the ICP, the standard overstay fine for residence visa holders is Dh50 per day. If you have a standard expired residence visa, the authorities grant you a grace period of 30 to 90 days, after which, the overstay fine applies. For cancelled or expired Golden Visas and Green Visas, the grace period is up to six months. Renewing visas from outside the UAEIf you are a resident who has been outside the UAE for more than 180 days, you risk automatic cancellation of your residence visa. According to the EGSH, exceptions include Golden Visa holders, Green Visa holders, students studying abroad with official documentation, public sector employees on assignment, and certain other categories listed by ICP.If you have been outside the UAE for more than 180 days and your residence visa has been cancelled, you cannot renew it. You must apply for a permit to re-enter the UAE. Once approved, you must enter the country within 30 days and then apply for renewal. However, in this case, you must undergo the full visa renewal process, as if you are applying for a new visa.If you are seeking to renew your visa from outside the UAE, but you are still within the 180-day window, you cannot do so remotely. The process requires your physical presence in the UAE for the medical fitness test, and the biometric capture (if needed) for the Emirates ID.
