Trump praises Democrats after Republican defeat in midterm elections

US President Donald Trump offered rare praise for his Democratic opponents on Tuesday, saying they had done a "good job" after defeating his Republican Party in the midterm elections.

Trump told Fox News: "I think the Democrats did a good job. I really do." He said they had run a strong campaign, adding: "I shouldn't feel guilty."

The US president acknowledged that the war in Iran had played a role in the Republicans' losses in the congressional midterm elections, as Democrats moved towards taking control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, posing a challenge to his legislative agenda.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said Democrats would send him what he described as "crazy" legislation, adding that he would veto it.

"They'll send me things that don't make sense, and I'll veto them. Then, two months after I veto them, they'll call me and ask: 'How do we get this done?' And we'll work together," Trump said.

Trump added that the war in Iran had affected Republican candidates, despite voters approving of the way he had handled it. "I think part of it was because of Iran, but at the same time, people understand the importance of what I did with Iran," he said.

Democrats have wrested control of both chambers of Congress in a sweeping defeat for Republicans in the midterm elections, according to projections by US networks.

After previously securing control of the House of Representatives, Democrats managed to win Senate seats in at least six states, including traditionally Republican strongholds such as Texas, Kansas and South Carolina.
