In the Quran, the sky does not swear by many trees, but it swears by the olive: “By the fig and the olive” (Surat At-Tin, verse 1). In Surat An-Nur, olive oil becomes a metaphor for divine light itself: “Lit from a blessed olive tree, neither eastern nor western” (Surat An-Nur, verse 35). It is a tree “neither eastern nor western,” transcending geography to belong to the absolute. In the noble hadith, there is a clear call. Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Eat the oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it comes from a blessed tree” (reported by Tirmidhi).
