Star Wars: The Force Awakens grossed $936 million in 2015, making it the highest-grossing picture in US history by around $150 million. It was a large number that was supposed to be unattainable, and while a few films attempted to approach it during the last decade, they never came close.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day broke the all-time domestic box office record of $936,662,225 set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in achieved this record in just 47 days, which is just 47 days, or less than two months. In addition, Box Office Mojo reports that it took 165 days. This is Sony's victory lap.

Of course, there are other aspects to consider here. The most notable examples are inflation and premium film formats. Spider-Man attracted fewer viewers than Star Wars. They simply paid extra for it. But that number has never been important in Hollywood. If it did, Gone With the Wind would be the highest-grossing film of all time by a significant margin.
