SIS chief: Raising public awareness is a shared national responsibility

State Information Service (SIS) Chairman Alaa Youssef said building public awareness represents one of the most significant challenges facing Egypt at the current stage. He also stressed that, after the state’s success in confronting terrorism and advancing its development agenda, strengthening public awareness and promoting accurate understanding among citizens remains a national priority requiring the combined efforts of state institutions and civil society. Speaking at an event hosted by the Garden City Lions Club under the title “Building Awareness and Enhancing Social Responsibility”, Youssef praised the club’s contributions to community service and voluntary work over the past 26 years, highlighting the important role of civil society organisations in supporting social development and civic engagement. Youssef reviewed the SIS’s efforts to promote public awareness through its media centres across the country and through its outreach activities with university students aimed at enhancing understanding of national issues and societal challenges. He also highlighted the agency’s role in engaging with foreign media, providing accurate information about Egypt and correcting misinformation to support a clearer understanding of the country’s policies and positions internationally. The SIS chairman also discussed co‑operation with the National Alliance for Civil Development Work, noting that the alliance has become one of the country’s largest social protection umbrellas. He said it provides around 125 million services annually to approximately 40 million beneficiaries, including medical, food, financial, social and economic empowerment services. Youssef stressed that addressing awareness challenges requires continued co‑ordination among state institutions, civil society organisations and religious bodies, including Al‑Azhar, the Ministry of Awqaf and the Egyptian Church, to promote responsible social values, counter misinformation and strengthen societal cohesion. The event also featured discussions on national and international issues, the role of the media in combating rumours, and efforts to develop awareness campaigns and communication strategies that reflect the scale of Egypt’s development achievements and national projects.
