Saudi Arabia calls for stronger global cooperation to secure major sporting events

NEW YORK — Saudi Arabia called for stronger international cooperation to safeguard major sporting events while chairing a high-level UN session on evolving security threats. Ambassador Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations to the United Nations, Dr. Abdulaziz Alwasil, chaired the session, titled "Protecting Major Sporting Events: Delivery and Legacy in an Era of Complex Threats." Alwasil said Saudi Arabia's hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2034™ presents an opportunity to strengthen partnerships, build capacity, and create a lasting legacy. He highlighted the Kingdom's comprehensive preparations, which integrate advanced security measures, modern technologies, capacity-building initiatives, and partnerships with international stakeholders to address emerging threats. Alwasil underscored the need for close coordination among countries and relevant stakeholders to safeguard major sporting events.
