Saudi Arabia calls for nuclear-free Middle East, says Israel stance blocks progress

NEW YORK — Saudi Arabia stressed the need for full implementation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, while calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and renewed efforts toward establishing a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders.The remarks were delivered by Saudi Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel during the 11th Review Conference of the treaty, as well as in broader UN discussions on regional developments.Al-Wasel said the treaty remains a cornerstone of the global non-proliferation regime, stressing the importance of maintaining balance among its three pillars: disarmament, non-proliferation, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.He called on nuclear-armed states to fulfill their obligations, emphasizing that the only guarantee against the use of nuclear weapons is their complete elimination.Saudi Arabia also underscored the right of member states to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without additional restrictions, while promoting transparency and cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.On regional issues, the Kingdom referenced Iranian attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, which were condemned under UN Security Council Resolution 2817, and stressed the importance of strengthening regional security, respecting sovereignty, and upholding the principles of good neighborliness.Al-Wasel also called for Iran’s full cooperation with the IAEA to ensure the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.Saudi Arabia reaffirmed that establishing a Middle East free of nuclear weapons remains a collective international responsibility, noting that Israel’s continued non-accession to the treaty poses a major obstacle to achieving a weapons-free zone in the region.On the Palestinian issue, the Kingdom warned of the dangers of escalation and reiterated its condemnation of Israeli attacks in Palestine and Lebanon.It also rejected any attempts to alter the legal and historical status of Jerusalem and its Islamic holy sites, and condemned illegal settlement activities as violations of international law that undermine peace prospects.Saudi Arabia stressed that achieving a just and comprehensive peace requires an immediate ceasefire, preventing displacement, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders in line with international legitimacy.
