By Mohamed Attia Russian travellers will soon have direct access to Egypt’s Mediterranean coast after Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) approved direct flights to Alexandria International Airport, formerly known as Borg El Arab, and Al Alamein International Airport. The decision reflects the efforts of the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority, headed by Pilot Sameh Fawzy, and the Egyptian Airports Company, led by Pilot Wael el-Nashar, to boost and expand inbound tourism. The new routes are expected to give Russian tourists easier access to Egypt’s Mediterranean attractions, particularly Alexandria, known as the ‘Bride of the Mediterranean’, as well as the North Coast and New Alamein. The move comes amid growing Egyptian-Russian ties across various sectors, notably air transport and civil aviation. The new direct services are also expected to boost ties between the two peoples and meet growing demand for air travel between Russian cities and Egypt’s regional airports.
