Retail investors turn net sellers of SpaceX shares for first time since IPO

Retail investors became net sellers of SpaceX shares for the first time since the company's June initial public offering, signalling a shift in sentiment after weeks of strong support from individual traders.According to data from Vanda Research, retail investors sold a net $4.5 million worth of SpaceX shares on August 7, marking the first negative daily reading since the company debuted on the public market on June 12.The move comes after a volatile period for the stock, which surged as much as 67% above its IPO price of $135 before surrendering all of those gains and falling more than 22% below its debut price earlier this month."A shift from persistent net buying to selling is rarely about one catalyst; it is usually a mix of profit-taking, position fatigue and investors reassessing the risk-reward," said Sam North, market analyst at eToro."Friday is particularly interesting because retail turned net sellers while the shares were rebounding strongly and trading back around the IPO price. That looks more like investors using strength to take some money off the table than panic selling."By comparison, SpaceX's highest single-day retail inflow reached $144.6 million on June 16, indicating that the latest outflow remains modest relative to earlier buying activity. The change in sentiment follows a sharp decline in the stock on August 5, when shares fell 13.6% after investors reacted to SpaceX's first quarterly earnings report as a listed company.Despite concerns over the company's spending plans, retail investors had largely stepped in to buy the dip. Net buying on August 5 ranked as the fourth-highest daily inflow since the IPO.Investors have been weighing management's optimism about future returns from artificial intelligence investments against concerns about how long the company's profitable Starlink satellite internet business can support those expenditures.SpaceX shares have closed below their $135 IPO price every day since July 16, though the stock was up 2.4% at $136.30 in premarket trading on Monday.Retail investors have played an important role in SpaceX's public market performance, with at least 30% of shares offered in the IPO reserved for individual investors. The stock continues to attract significant attention across online trading communities. On Monday morning, SpaceX ranked as the sixth most-trending ticker on Stocktwits, while it was the second most-mentioned stock on Reddit's WallStreetBets forum over the previous week, according to sentiment tracker SwaggyStocks.Market dynamics have also shifted following the expiration of the first in a series of lock-up restrictions last week, which more than doubled the number of SpaceX shares available for public trading.
