Pyramids shine as Egyptian League action continues

CAIRO — The opening round of the 2026–27 Egyptian Premier League continued with four matches on its second day. Pyramids FC thrashed Ghazl El-Mahalla, Al-Masry of Port Said edged Smouha, Talae El-Geish stunned Arab Contractors, while Petrojet earned a valuable draw against Asyut Petroleum. Pyramids FC 3-0 El-Mahalla Pyramids FC started the season with a 3-0 win against Ghazl El-Mahalla at El-Mahalla Stadium. Jordanian left-winger Odeh Fakhoury put Pyramids ahead in the 41st minute. Then playmaker Nasser Maher made it 2-0 in the 67th minute, before right-winger Zalaka added the third goal eight minutes later. It was also the first game for Pyramids new coach Rhulani Mokwena, who replaced Croatian coach Krunoslav Jurcic. Al-Masry 1-0 Smouha Al-Masry of Port Said began the league with a 1-0 win over Smouha at New Suez Stadium. The only goal came in the 76th minute when Smouha goalkeeper Ahmed Mayhoub accidentally put the ball into his own net. Smouha tried to level the score but could not find a way to score. El-Geish 1-0 Contractors Talae El-Geish beat Arab Contractors 1-0 at the Military Sports Stadium. Defender Ahmed Alaa scored the only goal in the 70th minute. Arab Contractors pushed for an equaliser, but El-Geish held on to take all the three points. Asyut Petroleum 1-1 Petrojet Petrojet earned a late 1-1 draw against Asyut Petroleum at Borg El-Arab Stadium in Alexandria. Striker Ahmed Ali gave Asyut Petroleum the lead in the 75th minute. But Petrojet defender Ahmed Bahbah scored in the second minute of stoppage time to rescue a point for his team. New league format The new format makes every match important, with teams fighting for the title, continental places and survival. The 20 teams will play 19 matches in the first stage. During this stage, each team will face every opponent once. The first stage will end on February 20, 2027. After that the teams will split into two groups. The second stage will start on March 8. Title and relegation The top six teams will move into the championship group. These top six teams will play another 15 matches. These games will decide the league champion and the teams that qualify for continental competitions. The teams finishing from seventh to 20th will enter the relegation group. These teams will fight to stay in the Premier League. At the end of the season, four teams will be relegated and three teams will be promoted.
