Reports have recently begun circulating regarding an increase in the prices of prepaid recharge cards and data packages, especially after the spokesperson for the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) spoke about studying the matter further. The NTRA spokesperson, Mohamed Ibrahim, confirmed during a Saturday phone interview with the “Kalema Akhira” (The Last Word”) that various mobile operators had submitted requests to the NTRA a while back to raise prices or adjust certain existing rates. He added that the authority continuously monitors market conditions and changes to ensure a balance between service quality and cost for consumers. Ibrahim indicated that the discussions regarding increasing telecommunications service prices are still under review, and no official decision has yet been made regarding price adjustments or increases. A member of the Communications and Information Technology Committee in the House of Representatives, Abeer Nassar, explained that the committee has not received any proposals or requests regarding increasing the prices of prepaid recharge cards or internet packages since the beginning of the current legislative session. She pointed out that such decisions must be subject to study and market review before being made and implemented. Nassar added that a recent meeting with the CEO of WE not address this issue during their discussion.
