North Korea Says Accusations Linking It to Binance Heist are ‘Grave Political Provocation’

North Korea on Tuesday flatly dismissed the outcome of a US investigation that accused Pyongyang hackers of standing behind a $6 billion cryptocurrency heist on the Binance platform. Kim Yo Jong, sister of leader Kim Jong Un, called the charge “a grave political provocation,” according to state media agency KCNA. Kim described the US claim as “absurd rhetoric and nothing new.” Washington had also attributed a Bybit raid in 2025 to North Korean hackers. “It is a grave political provocation against the DPRK that the US misleads international public opinion as if all the cybercrimes in different parts of the world are our deeds,” Kim Yo Jong said. DPRK is a short form for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. On Saturday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said that North Korea was responsible for the theft of more than $6 billion in virtual assets from Binance. This was reportedly the biggest crypto-exchange heist on record, well above the roughly $1.5 billion Bybit raid in February 2025, which was also attributed to North Korean hackers. Kim called Washington's accusation a “sinister” attempt to damage the international image of North Korea and undermine its dignity and national prestige, as well as another grave violation of the sovereignty of the North in cyberspace. She also said “it is the consistent policy stand of the DPRK government to resolutely oppose all sorts of malicious acts in cyberspace.” Binance says it has more than 335 million users worldwide and average daily trading volumes of $95 billion across digital assets and derivatives. On Friday, cryptocurrency prices fell on news of the hack, which analysts said could be the largest financial heist of all time. US President Donald Trump, who constantly boast his personal rapport with North Korean leader Kim Jong, casted doubt on North Korea’s involvement in the hack. “I'm not concerned. We’re learning about it. We don't know if it’s North Korea,” Trump told reporters at his residence in Florida late Saturday. In her statement on Monday, Kim Yo Jong said, “We have issues to reconsider in diverse aspects as regards the very unpleasant US hostile attitude.”
