The National Bank of Egypt’s (NBE) corporate finance and syndicated loans portfolio recorded steady growth during the current financial year, reflecting the bank’s strong financial position and balanced strategy of supporting the national economy and financing major projects across various productive and service sectors. Mohamed El Etreby, NBE CEO, affirmed the bank’s continued commitment to providing the financing required by major projects that create added value for the economy, drive development and support the state’s plans to advance various economic sectors. These include transport, healthcare and education, telecommunications and information technology, petrochemicals, non-banking financial services, environmental services including waste management and recycling, real estate development, building materials, food industries, oil, agriculture and tourism. Such efforts contribute to sustainable economic development, localise industry and create more job opportunities for young Egyptians, while helping reduce imports, increase exports, improve the trade balance and maximise the Egyptian economy’s foreign currency resources, El Etreby said. El-Turky also explained that NBE’s corporate finance and syndicated loans portfolio reached around EGP 5.5trn in June 2026, up approximately 14% from 2025. This strengthened the bank’s market share to around 48% of Egypt’s total banking credit market. The portfolio comprised EGP 4.6trn in direct financing, including medium- and long-term loans and working capital facilities, and EGP 845bn in indirect financing, including documentary credits and letters of guarantee. The number of active corporate customers reached around 1,650 in June 2026, with 110 new customers acquired during the period, representing total approved credit limits of EGP 36.6bn, she noted. In syndicated lending, NBE arranged 19 syndicated financing transactions worth EGP 169bn during the first half of 2026, with the bank’s share amounting to EGP 60bn. El-Turky stressed that NBE continues to play a key role in driving Egypt’s economic and social development, in line with its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and Egypt Vision 2030. This includes expanding financing for green and sustainable projects. According to El-Turky, this financing has supported a range of projects, including solar energy, water treatment, sustainable transport and green buildings, as well as helping industrial companies transition towards lower-carbon production systems. NBE has also launched its first in-house financing programme, the “Green Buildings Financing Programme”, designed to finance sustainable buildings across various economic sectors through a flexible financing structure serving a range of customers and sustainable projects. To date, financing has been approved for three customers under the programme, with a total value of EGP 1.7bn. A further eight customers, representing a total of EGP 5.52bn in financing, are currently under consideration. Sherif Riad, NBE Executive Head of Corporate Credit and Syndicated Loans, said the key syndicated loan transactions led and arranged by the bank included those for Al Sharif Hotels and Tourism, Arabia Hotels, Sky Ports, Redcon Properties, Ezz Rolling Mills, a subsidiary of Ezz Dekheila Steel, Qased Kheir for General Supplies and Contracting, Rawasi for Urban Development, and the Egyptian-Emirati Tourism Development Company. In addition, NBE participated in several securitisation bond issuances for a number of clients, taking part in five issuances worth a total of EGP 8.5bn, with the bank’s share amounting to EGP 1.8bn.
