The US Secret Service announced the arrest and charging of a suspect after officers found him inside a vehicle near the White House in possession of firearms.
The suspect reportedly told authorities that he was hearing voices in his head telling him to kill President Donald Trump.
The man was arrested on Thursday evening after Secret Service officers approached him because he was "acting suspiciously" inside a parked car.
US officials revealed that the suspect, identified as Ronnie Yordrix Guanipa Crinos, subsequently spoke of voices in his head telling him to travel to the nation's capital and kill the Republican president.
Shortly afterwards, officers discovered that the vehicle the suspect was driving had been reported stolen and that he was carrying three different firearms and dozens of rounds of ammunition, according to a statement issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
Crinos was found to be a Venezuelan migrant living in the United States illegally after entering the country through Texas in March 2024.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that charges had been filed against him and that he remains in custody.
This is the latest in a series of arrests by the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies targeting individuals who have threatened Trump's life or the lives of his family members since he returned to office last year.
Previous Assassination Attempts
Trump has faced at least three assassination attempts over the past two years.
On July 13, 2024, he was shot at during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump sustained a minor injury to his right ear. One attendee was killed and two others were seriously injured, while the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by Secret Service snipers.
Secret Service agents also spotted an armed man hiding among the trees with an assault rifle pointed towards Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach while the president was playing on September 15, 2024. Security personnel opened fire on the suspect, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, who fled in his vehicle before being arrested later and sentenced to life in prison.
During the White House Correspondents' Dinner on April 25, 2026, an attack and shooting took place in the lobby of the Washington Hilton, where the event was being held in the presence of Trump and his vice president, JD Vance.
The US president was unharmed, while security personnel quickly subdued the attacker, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, and arrested him at the scene. He was subsequently formally charged with attempted assassination.
Meanwhile, Israeli reports indicated that there were signs of a possible assassination attempt against Trump during his attendance at the NATO summit in Turkey in June 2026.
Earlier, the US Department of Justice had also revealed that it had foiled a contract killing network linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, which had been planning to assassinate Trump ahead of the 2024 presidential election. At the time, it said that those involved had been arrested and convicted in court before the plot could be carried out.
