Lebanon-Israel talks move forward as US role becomes key to border arrangements

The principle of Israel’s withdrawal from all Lebanese territory is already established. However, the potential sticking point lies in the security arrangements that must be agreed upon and put into effect to fully clear the area south of the Litani River of illegal weapons and militia fighters. These security arrangements concern the areas and highlands that currently form part of what is known as the “yellow belt” established by Israel. This area includes heights overlooking northern Israel, from which Israel must withdraw, while ensuring they are fully secured against any possibility of Hezbollah members or other illegal armed groups infiltrating them and using them to heighten tensions along the border. This is why the Lebanese-American military and security partnership is important, as it could play a key role in the area.
