ALBAWABA — The Pentagon’s Joint Staff withdrew a tribute to a recently fired three-star general on Thursday, as officials accused him of leaking classified information about the wars in Iran and Ukraine.
Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia was removed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth from his position overseeing strategy, plans and policy for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, according to The Associated Press.
Initially, the Joint Staff thanked Sylvia and his family for his 32 years of service. A day later, it reversed course, saying the statement did not appropriately reflect the circumstances surrounding his departure.
An unnamed Pentagon official alleged that Sylvia shared classified information with journalists and failed three polygraph examinations. Those claims remain under investigation.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the department had taken personnel action to protect sensitive information and referred the matter to the Justice Department for potential further legal action.
A reporter just asked Trump about the removal of Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, but referred to him only as "Lt. Gen. Sylvia."
"She’s got problems," Trump said. "She’s gonna have big problems. We’re very much looking for leakers" https://t.co/TvAi6IuuVL
Sylvia did not immediately respond to AP’s requests for comment. The report did not announce criminal charges.
His departure removes a senior official from an office responsible for coordinating military strategy and planning while Washington weighs further action against Iran.
Sylvia previously commanded the 101st Airborne Division. His military decorations include six Bronze Star Medals, one for valor, and a Purple Heart.
