Ismailia blogger Donia Fouad, who had amassed up to four million LE in donations from a scam cancer diagnosis, has turned herself in to the police following investigations. Police had previously arrested Fouad’s husband for questioning regarding her fundraising efforts, which she claimed were for cancer treatment. Fouad had confessed on her official Facebook page that she did this because she needed the attention. “I am mentally ill and need treatment. Please help me. I did this because I needed attention, and I admit I was wrong and deserve what’s happening to me.” She continued, “I loved everyone’s concern for me while I was pretending to be ill. My husband’s looks and his concern, and everyone asking about me, were a huge source of psychological support. I rejected the idea that I was mentally ill and didn’t listen to people when they advised me to seek psychological treatment. Now I want to tell them, ‘You were right. I will begin my journey of psychological treatment.’” The incident unfolded when Fouad claimed to have cancer and collected donations from her social media followers to cover her treatment costs. Medical tests confirmed she was healthy and did not have the disease. Some donors have begun taking legal action against her after being victims of online fraud.
