ALBAWABA - Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued an indirect threat, on Monday, hinting at the possibility of attacking major internet cables running along the seabed of the Strait of Hormuz, an escalatory move with potentially grave economic and technical implications.
A statement from the IRGC read, "Seven major cables run along the seabed of the Strait of Hormuz, upon which global data traffic, commercial communications, and the internet depend," adding, "We point this out so that the enemy may grasp this reality."
In the same vein, the Iranian news agency Fars published a report titled "A $10 Trillion Treasure on the Seabed of the Strait of Hormuz," asserting that all fiber-optic cables laid across the seabed of the Strait would fall under absolute Iranian sovereignty.
The report also revealed that following what Iran describes as the "restoration of its full administration over the Strait of Hormuz, in exercise of its sovereign rights within its territorial waters."
The warnings came amid continued tension and fears of war resumptions, as many media reports suggest that the United States could strike Iran again after the midterm elections in Washington.
