Iran Blasts US Over ‘Absurd’ Bid for Anti-Tehran Resolution at UN

UNITED NATIONS – The Iranian Permanent Mission to the United Nations launched a blistering attack on the United States Thursday, accusing Washington of using “coercion, pressure, and even threats” to drum up support for an anti-Iran resolution concerning the Strait of Hormuz—dismissing the effort as “absurd and deceptive.” In a sharply worded post on X, the mission rejected the US attempt to frame the number of co-sponsors for its draft resolution as proof of broad international backing and Iran’s isolation. “No number of coerced co-sponsorships can legitimize Washington’s ongoing internationally wrongful acts against Iran, including maritime blockade, attacks on and illegal seizure of Iranian commercial vessels, and hostage-taking of their crews in a manner resembling piracy,” the mission stated. The Iranian mission further charged that the US claims of widespread support are nothing more than “a desperate effort to manufacture legitimacy for predetermined political objectives,” while undermining the credibility of the UN Security Council and providing political cover for unlawful actions. Tehran has maintained that the current crisis in the Strait of Hormuz stems directly from what it calls the “unprovoked US-Israeli war of aggression” against the Islamic Republic. Iran first shut down the strategic waterway to enemies and their allies following the launch of illegal US-Israeli military action on February 28. According to Iranian officials, the United States recently launched a military campaign aimed at forcibly reopening the Strait of Hormuz, but was forced to abandon the maneuver in the face of Iran’s steadfast resistance against “American piracy and threats to maritime security.” A draft Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz, circulated last month by Bahrain and the United States, was ultimately vetoed by China and Russia.
