Dubai: From a simple humanitarian complaint from a patient to an integrated service that changes patients' lives - this is how Dubai turned a story of suffering for access to dialysis sessions into a story of rapid response that puts the human being before any other consideration. According to the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), since the launch of the dialysis patient transport service in 2023, the treatment journey no longer ends inside the hospital. Patient care has extended to the road itself, through a transport system that covers all areas of the emirate, and provides safe and regular access for about 25 patients, with automatic bookings linked to treatment appointments. The initiative reduces the physical and psychological burden on patients and their families, and enhances their commitment to their treatment plans.Dubai Health reported that the initiative’s results were not limited to providing transportation, but also contributed to reducing delays and absences from dialysis sessions, improving the regularity of treatment plans, while providing advanced cases with special arrangements and integrated medical support that accompanies the patient from the moment he leaves his home until he arrives at his treatment destination, in a model that embodies the concept of comprehensive health care.DHA explained that the launch of the kidney dialysis patient transport service was inspired by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, who said that human health is the most precious thing, and that health services should reach patients wherever they are, in order to achieve a better quality of life for them, and enhance their sense of health security. The DHA stressed that the service represents a practical translation of this approach, by removing one of the most prominent challenges facing kidney dialysis patients in their treatment journey. The authorities added that the idea for the service was not born within meeting rooms or through theoretical studies, but rather began from a humanitarian observation made by a patient who, after each dialysis session, suffered from severe fatigue that made him unable to drive his vehicle or use means of transportation safely. This turned the journey back home into a new challenge that added to patients’ suffering from the disease and treatment. In response to this incident, the service was launched in 2023 to provide a safe and comfortable means of transportation that ensures patients can reach their treatment sessions and return from them without difficulty.Patients usually experience post-dialysis fatigue, because the treatment causes rapid fluid shifts, sudden changes in blood chemistry, and heavy physical stress on the body. In normal cases, patients are transported via Dubai Health vehicles, equipped to provide the highest levels of comfort and reduce the physical and psychological stress associated with dialysis sessions. Coordination is made with the competent authorities to provide the necessary medical supervision for cases that require follow-up during transport, while advanced cases receive special arrangements that ensure the provision of full medical support from the moment the patient leaves until they reach their destination. The DHA pointed out that the procedures for benefiting from the service are designed to be extremely easy. Coordination takes place during the first session, between the health facility and the transport team, in order to approve the request. Then, all the patient’s trips are automatically listed according to the dialysis session dates recorded in the system, without the need to submit a new request each time, which reduces the administrative burden on patients and ensures the continuity of the service without interruption. The DHA confirmed that the service covers all areas of the emirate of Dubai without exception, based on the principle of ensuring access to healthcare for everyone who needs it. The authorities emphasised not allowing geographical or logistical obstacles to stand between the patient and receiving treatment on time, reflecting the institution’s commitment to providing integrated health services that focus on the human being first. The service plays an important role in promoting patients’ commitment to dialysis session appointments, as it helps remove one of the biggest obstacles they face, which is the difficulty of moving around after the sessions end, due to extreme fatigue. This is reflected in reducing the rates of delay or absence from appointments, and helping maintain the regularity of treatment plans, and improving the chances of stabilising the patients’ health condition. The DHA explained that the effects of the initiative are not limited to the health aspect only, but extend to psychological and social aspects, as it contributes to reducing the anxiety and tension associated with the transportation process, and gives patients a greater sense of comfort and security during their treatment journey. At the same time, it reduces daily burdens that patients’ families bear in accompanying them to hospitals and bringing them back, which is reflected positively in the quality of life of the entire family. It also establishes the role of the health system as a true partner that supports patients in the details of their daily lives, and not only inside treatment rooms. The DHA emphasised that the service’s operational system was designed with the flexibility to respond to various health conditions, so that appropriate transportation and necessary equipment are provided to each patient according to their needs. There is immediate coordination with medical teams and relevant authorities whenever the situation requires it, to ensure that patient safety remains an absolute priority at all stages of the journey. The authorities concluded by emphasising that the kidney dialysis patient transport service represents a model of comprehensive healthcare that goes beyond the limits of traditional treatment, and embodies Dubai Health’s commitment to listening to patients and transforming their needs into practical services that touch their daily lives, thereby enhancing quality of life and making the treatment journey easier, safer, and more humane.
