Fairford Plot: Has Britain just found Its first Iran link?

ALBAWABA - British counterterrorism police have arrested a dual British-Iranian national as investigators examine possible foreign state involvement in a suspected plot near RAF Fairford, a military base used by US forces in operations against Iran.

The suspect, identified by Reuters as a 25-year-old man, was arrested in Westminster, London, on Thursday on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts under Britain's Terrorism Act. Police also questioned a 26-year-old British national and searched two properties in the area.

The arrest marks a significant development in an investigation that began on September 27, when five British men in their 20s were detained after three vans were reported behaving suspiciously near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The five were arrested on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses before later being released on bail.

Police subsequently confirmed that no improvised explosive devices were discovered, although a quantity of petrol was recovered from the vehicles.

The investigation has increasingly focused on whether a foreign government may have played a role. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications” that Iran was involved, while police said they were examining “all possible angles,” including possible foreign state involvement.

The alleged "Iranian attack" on the RAF base in Fairford is becoming increasingly ridiculous. It seems the "Iranian commandos" forgot their bombs, their guns? But decided to call the Police on themselves? They were so dangerous, they were let walk out of custody hours later. pic.twitter.com/zGZzEqM9TB

US officials have also raised suspicions of foreign involvement. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the incident involved a foreign actor but stopped short of publicly identifying a country, while President Donald Trump previously suggested a possible Iranian connection. Reuters

The dual national's arrest does not itself establish Iranian state involvement, and British authorities have not publicly disclosed evidence linking him to Tehran. Counterterrorism officials say the investigation remains complex, with the suspects' activities, motives and any potential foreign connections still being examined. Counter Terrorism Policing.
