Experts warn gamers against fake websites offering free in-game rewards

Berlin: German consumer protection portal Watchlist Internet has warned video game enthusiasts to exercise caution when visiting websites that promise free outfits, virtual items or in-game credits.Experts advised users not to log into such websites using their gaming accounts or platform credentials, stressing that many of these sites are designed to steal account information.According to the portal, fraudulent websites are often phishing traps used by cybercriminals to obtain login credentials and gain access to gaming accounts. Once compromised, hackers can take control of valuable digital assets, including purchased content, game progress records and payment information stored within accounts.Experts noted that stolen gaming accounts can be resold for significant sums, particularly those in which users have invested substantial time or money. They warned that the value of an account often increases with the amount of progress achieved and digital items acquired, making experienced players a frequent target for cybercriminals.Users who believe they have fallen victim to phishing attacks or shared login credentials or security codes are advised to act immediately.Recommended steps include:Changing account passwords immediately if access is still available.Using account recovery tools or contacting technical support if access has been lost.Securing email accounts by changing passwords and enabling two-factor authentication (2FA).Contacting their bank and filing a police report if payment details have been misused or financial losses have occurred.Saving screenshots of phishing websites, emails and suspicious text messages as evidence.Warning friends and other users, as compromised accounts may be used in further fraud attempts. To reduce the risk of phishing attacks, experts recommend enabling two-factor authentication on all accounts, including gaming platforms. They also advise users to carefully review emails containing verification codes and ensure they relate to legitimate login attempts or account changes.Additional recommendations include regularly reviewing applications and websites connected to gaming accounts, removing any unfamiliar services, using strong and unique passwords for each account, and adopting passkey technology where available.Experts said passkeys offer a more secure login method by reducing reliance on traditional passwords and improving protection against account theft.
