Only weeks ago, Paris witnessed something extraordinary. Hundreds of thousands gathered to welcome Pope Leo XIV in a remarkable display of faith that brought tears of hope and joy to millions around the world.
Today, French streets have witnessed flames, vandalism, looting, and violence. What a painful contrast!
And France is not alone: from Italy and Belgium to Spain and Portugal, protests have spread across Europe. Some remain peaceful, but violence in some spreads like a plague through the continent’s social fabric.
One gathering celebrated the human spirit, reminding us of Europe's greatness. The other exposed the destructive instincts of those who mistake anger for courage and lawlessness for justice, reminding us of Europe's real wounds.
How did a civilization that contributed so much to culture, freedom, and human dignity reach a point where destroying its achievements is presented as defending them?
To understand this troubling reality, I believe we must confront three fundamental failures: the failure to scrutinize the legitimacy of the demands, the destructiveness of the methods employed, and the political leadership that has allowed Europe's social and cultural foundations to weaken.
I. Not Every Demand Is Just, Nor Every Protest Noble
Europe is experiencing social unrest amid economic pressures. Some grievances are genuine; others deserve serious questioning.
A demand does not become legitimate simply because thousands shout it. France's public debt reached 119% of GDP in mid-2026. Demanding endless public spending without confronting its consequences is not social responsibility. It risks burdening future generations and threatening economic stability.
But I believe Europe’s problems run deeper: failed immigration policies, and the accumulative burden of ideological left.
Europe welcomed millions seeking security, dignity, freedom, and opportunity. Many have contributed admirably. Yet I believe too many have shown resentment rather than gratitude, treating the civilization that received them as though it must surrender to their ideological or religious demands. Some, obviously, act with a sense of vengeance.
To those who seek to impose their worldview through intimidation or contempt, I ask: If your vision of society and the common good is superior, why not demonstrate its success in your homeland rather than impose it on the country that welcomed you? And why did you leave in the first place?
Europe has every right to expect respect for its laws, heritage, and institutions. Hospitality is a virtue, not an obligation to surrender one’s identity.
II. Destruction Cannot Produce Justice
Even if the policies being challenged are wrong, can wrongdoing ever be corrected through further wrongdoing?
According to the French Senate, the 2023 riots caused nearly €1 billion in property damage, affecting 243 schools and more than 1,000 businesses. Recent violence has again damaged French communities.
What justice emerges from burning a school? What prosperity follows destroying a business? What advancement comes from attacking institutions families need?
You cannot correct wrongdoing by committing another wrong. You cannot claim moral superiority while practicing moral bankruptcy.
Europe’s own history offers alternatives. Poland’s Solidarity movement and Czechoslovakia’s Velvet Revolution helped bring democratic transformation in 1989 through disciplined, largely peaceful resistance. Progress requires courage, principles, and responsibility, not rage disguised as righteousness.
III. Europe’s Political Failure: When Tolerance Becomes Surrender
Behind these tensions lies what I consider Europe’s most consequential failure: leadership increasingly disconnected from the values sustaining civilization.
I hold Europe’s ideological left significantly responsible for weakening family, faith, national identity, and personal responsibility. Some movements, evidently, have gone beyond defending secular government and civil liberties to undermining traditional beliefs, especially the family.
Under banners of openness and tolerance, leaders promote policies whose consequences they avoid confronting. Is this political naïveté or deliberate ideology?
The family is not an outdated tradition. It is civilization’s first school of morality, discipline, sacrifice, responsibility, and respect. When families weaken, communities lose “the” essential foundation. When entitlement replaces responsibility, citizens may learn their rights but forget their obligations and duties.
Europe’s achievements did not emerge from emptiness. Greek philosophy, Roman law, Christian faith and intellectual traditions, the Renaissance, universities, and scientific discovery profoundly shaped humanity.
Its history includes serious injustices, but also the courage to recognize failures, pursue reform, and advance humanity. That is how humanity advanced. Such a legacy deserves preservation and renewal, not contempt and demolition.
These three failures demand more than political speeches. They demand a genuine awakening, particularly among Europe's peaceful, civilized majority and the good people who continue to defend family, faith, cultural continuity, fiscal discipline, and civic responsibility.
Wake up, with conviction, courage, and the will to defend civilization!
Europe needs leadership capable of restoring order, implementing responsible immigration policies, strengthening families, enforcing equal accountability, and distinguishing genuine justice from ideological absurdity.
Europe need not apologize for cherishing its own identity. Those who choose to live within its borders must respect it. Hence, the question is no longer whether Europe can contain the riots. It is whether Europe possesses the moral resolve to preserve what generations before it built.
History teaches us that civilizations are not destroyed only by those who set streets on fire. They are equally endangered when those entrusted with their protection lose the courage to defend their foundations.
Europe, remember who you are! Reclaim your conscience, your courage, and your future… before others decide that future for you.Disclaimer: The opinions expressed by the writers are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Annahar.
