ALBAWABA - Alex Gibney’s upcoming documentary Musk is facing an unexpected problem ahead of its theatrical release: major social media platforms are refusing to run its trailer as a paid advertisement.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, YouTube, TikTok, Meta-owned Instagram and Facebook, as well as X, have all rejected advertising for the documentary. The film is being distributed by Bleecker Street, which reportedly did not expect the platforms to block the promotional campaign.
The rejection has left the distributor trying to understand why the trailer was turned down. A person familiar with Bleecker Street’s operations told The Hollywood Reporter that the company is currently working to determine the reasons behind the decisions.
X’s refusal may attract less surprise because the platform is owned by Elon Musk, the subject of Gibney’s documentary. However, the decisions by YouTube, TikTok and Meta have raised more questions, particularly because the companies cited policies concerning political content.
The trailer for Musk was released Thursday and includes footage from a political rally in 2024, along with a reference to the 2024 election.
Bleecker Street argues that the material is part of a documentary about a major public figure and does not amount to campaign advertising for a specific candidate.
TikTok and Meta do not allow political advertising under their current policies. Meta's restrictions were introduced in part following the controversy surrounding Cambridge Analytica and the 2016 U.S. election.
YouTube's decision has created additional confusion because the platform does allow certain political advertising, including campaign ads from verified candidates with required disclosures.
Bleecker Street has appealed the decisions from YouTube, TikTok and Meta. Meta has already rejected the appeal, while TikTok and YouTube are still reviewing the company's requests.
X, meanwhile, has declined to work with Bleecker Street on Musk and has also refused advertising requests for the distributor's other upcoming films.
Representatives for Meta, TikTok, YouTube and X did not immediately comment. Bleecker Street confirmed that the initial advertising requests were rejected and said it continues to appeal the decisions.

The situation is particularly striking because of the subject of Gibney's documentary.
Musk is a four-hour film examining the billionaire's life, businesses and influence, including his ownership of X since 2022 and allegations surrounding content moderation and the suppression of certain voices on the platform.
The documentary's inability to purchase advertising on several of the world's largest social platforms has therefore added another layer to the conversation surrounding the film.
For documentaries, social media promotion can be especially important. Unlike major studio blockbusters with enormous advertising campaigns, documentaries often depend heavily on online discussion and word-of-mouth to attract audiences.
Musk is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on October 9 through Bleecker Street.
The controversy also comes after Universal, which is handling the film's international release, reportedly considered stepping away from the project before ultimately confirming that it would continue to support the documentary.
Meanwhile, another major tech figure is also heading to the big screen. Sony is preparing to release Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning, a drama centered on Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg. Its trailer remains available on YouTube.
