Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat on Monday discussed in a meeting with a delegation of China’s SANY Group, progress on plans to establish a factory to localize wind turbine manufacturing and implement wind energy projects with a capacity of 2,000 megawatt (MW) relying on local industry. The two sides also tackled requirements for the next phase of renewable energy projects based on locally-manufactured components, and the support provided under the State’s plan to localize industry and transfer technology. Discussions covered the work plan and efforts to accelerate timelines for adding new solar and wind capacities, in line with the State’s strategy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and increase the share of renewable and clean energy in the energy mix to 45 percent by 2028. The meeting further reviewed plans to support, develop and upgrade the national electricity grid to enhance its capacity to absorb renewable energy sources. Esmat highlighted the State’s efforts to support industrial localization, transfer modern technology and reduce pressure on foreign currency, stressing the importance of localizing industries related to renewable energy equipment within the framework of Egypt’s energy transition vision and the national energy strategy. He pointed to cooperation and partnerships with the private sector in solar and wind projects, noting the electricity sector is working to manufacture renewable energy equipment locally to meet domestic demand and export to neighboring countries. The minister affirmed the State’s commitment to providing the necessary support, outlining measures aimed at increasing the local component in renewable energy projects and presenting available investment opportunities under the national energy strategy.
