Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, and a visiting delegation from the World Bank Group (WBG), probed on Monday prospects of boosting co-operation in the healthcare sector. The delegation also included representatives from the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The discussions focused on advancing initiatives to deliver high-quality healthcare services, while reinforcing the localisation of pharmaceutical, serum, and vaccine manufacturing, Health Ministry Spokesman Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar said. These efforts aim to support supply chains, enhance domestic production efficiency, and strengthen the competitiveness of Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector. Egypt’s robust scientific and research capabilities, combined with its strategic geographic position, qualify it to serve as a regional hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and export, the spokesman added. The meeting further reviewed national infrastructure capacities and coordination mechanisms among relevant entities, with emphasis on developing enabling regulatory frameworks, encouraging private sector participation, and enhancing logistics systems and centralised storage facilities. Vacsera’s capabilities and its technology transfer partnerships in biomanufacturing were also highlighted, he noted Discussions additionally addressed support for primary healthcare services, the promotion of women’s and children’s health, and efforts to reduce unnecessary cesarean sections. Co-operation on the universal health insurance system was also explored. Both sides affirmed that strengthened collaboration represents a valuable opportunity to enhance healthcare quality in Egypt and the wider region, while advancing sustainable development objectives.
