US Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Analysis Steven Haines announced a major milestone in US-Egypt trade relations following the Egyptian government’s formal acceptance of US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), a move that opens the Egyptian market to imported American automobiles and automotive parts. Alongside US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Robert Silverman, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Mohamed Farid, Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem, and General Motors Egypt General Manager Rohan Fernandes, Haines toured General Motors’ manufacturing plant in 6th of October City before making the announcement. “I am pleased that Egypt has opened a clear pathway to significantly increase US vehicle and parts exports to Egypt, building on the more than $256m in US automotive goods exported to Egypt last year,” Haines said. “These changes will also give Egyptian consumers greater access to safe, reliable, high-quality American vehicles and parts and will help unlock economic opportunity in both our countries,” he added. Rohan Fernandes, incoming Chairman and Managing Director of GM Egypt and Africa, said the decision provides greater certainty for automakers operating in the Egyptian market. “For General Motors, this establishes clear, operational market access in Egypt—a step that has already enabled Cadillac’s return in May,” Fernandes said. “It turns regulatory progress into tangible business outcomes and greater consumer choice for Egyptians. This builds confidence, enhances predictability, supports fair competition among global automakers, and strengthens Egypt’s position as a strong automotive market.” According to the US Department of Commerce, the adoption of US vehicle safety standards is expected to strengthen Egypt’s automotive sector by streamlining the import of American vehicles and components, enhancing market competitiveness, and expanding consumer choice. The agreement is also expected to support US automotive exporters, including General Motors, while creating new opportunities for Egyptian businesses and consumers, underscoring the growing economic partnership between the two countries.
