Egypt, Turkey discuss cooperation in water management, irrigation modernization

Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Hani Sewilam discussed, Tuesday, May 5, 2026, with Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumakli prospects for bilateral cooperation in water resources management, irrigation system modernization, and enhancing water use efficiency. The talks, held on the sidelines of the 5th Istanbul International Water Forum, also covered cooperation in rainfall forecasting and early warning systems using real-time data. Yumakli commended Egypt’s advanced expertise and effective systems in water resource management, noting the country’s notable achievements in this field. He stressed the importance of boosting cooperation, particularly in exchanging expertise and leveraging successful experiences, especially in modern water management technologies. During the meeting, Sewilam reviewed key water challenges facing Egypt and outlined state efforts under the “Second Generation of Water System 2.0,” which focuses on improving water use efficiency, expanding water treatment and reuse, and adopting smart management and digital transformation in the sector. He pointed to promising opportunities for cooperation in several areas, including irrigation modernization, efficient water use, real-time rainfall forecasting, early warning systems, and eco-friendly water infrastructure development, as well as training and capacity building. On the international level, Sewilam underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation in integrated water resources management, water reuse, desalination for intensive food production, and climate adaptation, alongside exchanging expertise and building capacities.
