Egypt to implement Daylight Saving Time on Friday

Egypt will begin implementing Daylight Saving Time (DST) for 2026 at the stroke of midnight on Thursday. The system will officially go into effect during the first minutes of Friday, April 24. Clocks are set to be advanced by 60 minutes in accordance with the law passed by the House of Representatives in April 2023 to reinstate the system. The law mandates that Daylight Saving Time begins on the last Friday of April each year and remains in effect until the end of the last Thursday in October. DST was a staple in Egypt for years before being officially abolished in 2016 under the government of the late Sherif Ismail, following legislative amendments. However, given evolving economic conditions and renewed energy challenges, the government reintroduced the system in 2023 under the cabinet of Mostafa Madbouly. In a 2024 report, a joint committee of the Local Administration and Constitutional and Legislative Affairs committees in the House of Representatives clarified the rationale behind the move. The primary objective of reinstating DST is to bolster state efforts in rationalizing energy consumption, particularly in response to ongoing global economic challenges.
