Dubai: One of Dubai's most recognisable landmarks, the Toyota Building on Sheikh Zayed Road, is nearing the end of its more than five-decade history as preparations continue for its demolition. The 15-storey building, completed in 1974, has witnessed the transformation of Dubai from a rapidly developing city into a global metropolis, standing through decades of growth along Sheikh Zayed Road.A recent site inspection found much of the building vacant, with remaining residents moving out their belongings as the property approaches full evacuation. Large sections of the building have reportedly been disconnected from power, while signs of ageing and deterioration are evident throughout the property.According to building management, around 95% of tenants have already vacated, with only four occupied apartments remaining. The building is expected to be fully vacated within the next month before the demolition process begins.Demolition plansBuilding management said the decision to demolish the property came after Dubai Municipality did not approve proposed maintenance and rehabilitation works due to the building's condition.Management also cited the property's high residential density as one of the factors behind the decision to clear the building.Once the remaining tenants leave, the building will enter the next phase leading to demolition.A landmark recognised by generationsAlthough 'Toyota Building' was never its official name, the property became widely known by that title after a large Toyota advertisement was installed on its rooftop in 1981.The prominent sign became one of Sheikh Zayed Road's most familiar landmarks and served as a reference point for generations of residents and motorists travelling through the city. The building predates many of the skyscrapers that now define Dubai's skyline and remained a distinctive feature of Sheikh Zayed Road as the corridor evolved into one of the emirate's most important business and residential districts.End of a chapterThe departure of the final residents marks the beginning of the building's final chapter. As the last apartments are emptied and preparations for demolition advance, the Toyota Building is set to become another part of Dubai's urban history, making way for the next phase of development along Sheikh Zayed Road.
